Urban Health Initiative (UHI)

The Urban Health Initiative (UHI) in India is a consortium of international, national, non-governmental and community-based organizations, working together to improve the health of the urban poor, especially in the state of Uttar Pradesh. UHI is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal and India. UHI supports government plans and goals to improve health and wellbeing of the urban poor. The initiative supports the implementation and scaleup of effective evidence-based strategies, as well as the testing of promising innovations.

Goal
The goal of UHI is to improve maternal and infant survival in urban settings, with an emphasis on strategies to expand access to and use of family planning.

UHI supports:

  • Individuals to use services and supplies and practice health behaviors to achieve their desired family size, maintain good health, and enhance their chances of survival.

  • Providers to deliver quality services and supplies that are responsive to client need, choice, safety and satisfaction.

  • Program managers to implement evidence-based strategies that expand access and utilization of services and supplies associated with improved health.

Objectives

  • Improve quality of services at public and private facilities.

  • Increase access to a range of services, supplies and providers.

  • Sustain demand for quality services and supplies.

  • Increase coverage of practices associated with survival, including family planning.

  • Increase scale or the number of cities with effective strategies.

Strategies

  • Align implementation with government programs likely to be scaled-up to benefit greater numbers of people.

  • Expand access to quality services and counseling, through routine and fixed service days.

  • Integrate family planning into antenatal, post-partum, and post-abortion counseling and services.

  • Foster strategic public and private partnerships that increase the choice of providers, outlets, services and supplies.

  • Expand outreach, community mobilization, and the involvement of nongovernmental and community-based organizations.

  • Socially market products and services to increase utilization.

  • Generate demand through TV, cable and radio spots.

  • Drive improvements through performance monitoring and mentoring.

  • Test and document innovations that improve health outcomes.

  • Advocate for policies and programs that facilitate access for the urban poor.

  • Model effective processes for joint planning and implementation.
