Launching of the NUHM in Uttar Pradesh, February 20, 2014

National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) was launched by Honorable Chief Minister?Shri Akhilesh Yadav?in Lucknow on February 20, 2014. Minister for Health and Family Welfare Mr. Ahmad Hasan, State Ministers for Health and Family Welfare Mr. Shanklal Manjhi and Mr. Nitin Agarwal presided the event. Principal Secretary Health and Family Welfare, NHM Mission Director, Add. Mission Director, Director General Family Welfare, UNICEF State Representative, Executive Director, Population Foundation of India shared the dais.
During inaugural speech, Mr. Praveer Kumar, Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare listed out the services that will be available to urban poor and vulnerable with the commencement of National Urban Health Mission. Focus of services will be the urban poor settlements and slums in the 83 cities and towns of the state. Further announced that department is simultaneously launching Sehat Sandesh Wahini, new OPD with modern fire control system in Balrampur Hospital of Lucknow. Soon a model urban Community Health Center of100 bed will become operational in Lucknow.
State Representative, UNICEF, Ms. Nilaufer, spoke about the prevailing health situation in UP and lauded efforts of health department in taking up the health agenda as priority.
Executive Director, Population Foundation of India, Ms. Poonam Muttreja spoke on the focus of the NUHM and expressed gratitude to state government for partnering with PFI in rolling out urban health program in the state.
Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Mr. Ahmad Hasan appreciated team efforts of department which is committed to improve the health services. Declared that the entire urban UP will get concerted focus of the health department and soon services will reach at the door steps of the poor and the vulnerable. Series of measures which his government has initiated such as introduction of 102 ambulance patient transport & referral services, availability of free diagnostic services and medicines in all the public health facilities of the state.
Honorable Chief Minister,?Shri Akhilesh Yadav, announced that National Urban Health Mission is being launched as a sub mission of National Health Mission and in the first phase 83 cities including the 75 district headquarters will receive the coverage. Affirmed the commitment of government, urban poor will get improved health services through a network of urban primary health centers, urban community health centers and outreach services. He declared that all the cities of over one lac population is being covered and during the next phase, towns having population of over fifty thousand shall be covered. Appreciated efforts of the department of health under able guidance of senior cabinet minister Mr. Ahmad Hasan, a person committed to improve the health services of the state.
The event concluded with the inauguration of the new OPD with a modern fire control system in Balrampur Hospital of Lucknow and the flagging off of Sehat Sandesh Wahini mobile vehicles by the Chief Minister.
