Clinton Health Access Initiative

Brief Profile

Founded in 2002, by President William J. Clinton, the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to strengthening integrated health systems around the world and expanding access to care and treatment for HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other illnesses. Based on the premise that business oriented strategy can facilitate solutions to global health challenges, CHAI acts as a catalyst to mobilize new resources and optimize the impact of these resources to save lives, via improved organization of commodity markets and more effective local management.

In India, CHAI’s programs span a broad spectrum of focus areas, including HIV paediatric care and treatment, health system strengthening and access to essential medicines.

Overview

CHAI began working in Essential Medicines in India in late 2012. The primary goal is to reduce the number of children who die from diarrhoea by increasing access to right treatment. Specifically, we work with the government and local partners to substantially increase access to the WHO recommended treatment for diarrhoea – Zinc and Oral Rehydration salts (ORS). The program is being implemented in three states in India – Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

The program is funded by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, IKEA Foundation and the International Zinc Association. Key partners include the Ministry of Health (MoH), state governments of UP, MP and Gujarat, and implementing partners/NGOs. The program is being implemented state-wide in Madhya Pradesh (51 districts), in 22 of 33 districts in Gujarat, and in 39 of 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh.
